Khan Shatyr

Khan Shatyr (Khan's Tent if translated from Kazakh into Russian) is a large trade and entertainment center in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. It was opened on June 6, 2010. This is the world's largest tent. The project investors were Coalco Development and Rixos Hotels international network in equal shares. The architectural project was developed by Norman Foster.

The building is a huge tent 150m high (spire) constructed of a network of steel anchor roosts, on which ETFE transparent polymer coating is applied. Thanks to special chemical composition it protects the internal premises of the complex from sharp drops in temperature and creates a comfortable microclimate inside the complex. The gist of the project is a tropical resort on the 4th level of TRC with all-year-round temperature of +35 degrees, a sandy beach, natural plants and an aqua park. There is a SPA center and an entertainment zone nearby.

Khan Shatyr is one of the world's ten best eco buildings by version of Forbes Style, the only building from the CIS territory which the magazine included in its hit parade. Khan Shatyr trade and entertainment center was opened as part of Astana Day celebration with participation of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev. A concert of classical music by Italian tenor, Andrea Bocelli, was arranged at the official ceremony.
